Dr. Marlon S. Pontillas, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC), attended and presented his paper titled “Exploring Teacher-Student Interaction in a Synchronous Online Modality: A Critical Discourse Analysis” at the 2024 Joint International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) and International Mother Language Day (IMLD) Conference. The event took place from February 23-25, 2024, at Caraga State University in Butuan City.
The conference, themed “Reshaping Language, Literacy, and Lifelong Learning,” gathered experts, educators, and researchers to address critical issues surrounding indigenous languages and education.ย
The event began with an opening ceremony featuring addresses from prominent figures such as the Presidents of Caraga State University and Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology, and the Mayor of Butuan City. A keynote speech by Dr. Ivan Anthony S. Henares, Secretary General of the United Nations National Commission of the Philippines, set the tone for discussions on language and education. The day concluded with a networking fellowship and Mayorโs Night.
The second day featured a deep dive into topics such as literacy enhancement and multilingual education through the Department of Education’s Matatag Curriculum. Dr. Pontillas actively participated in workshops on blended learning and language mapping, contributing his insights on teacher-student interactions in online education.
The final day emphasized governance in education and Indigenous Peoples (IP) education. Presentations on language policies for foundational learning were followed by panel discussions with contributions from The World Bank and higher education specialists.
