Science Instructors Attend the 11th Annual BIOTA Bicol Chapter Regional Convention and Scientific Sessions

Three faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC) participated in the 11th Annual BIOTA Bicol Chapter Regional Convention and Scientific Sessions, held on August 3-4, 2023, at the CBSUA Auditorium in Pili, Camarines Sur. The event, themed โ€œCreating a Mindful Generation: Biology Education and Mental Health Advocacy,โ€ brought together biology students, educators, and professionals from across the Bicol region. Representing CSPC were Ma. Ludilyn B. Agapito, Francia J. Babay, and Catherine B. Guarnes.

The convention featured a wide range of activities, including plenary sessions, workshops, research presentations, academic networking, and fellowship. The event opened with a keynote by Prof. Maricar S. Prudente from De La Salle University, who highlighted the role of action research in educational reform and evidence-based practices. This was followed by a plenary session led by Dr. Robert Joseph C. Sarmiento, a neurologist from the University of British Columbia, who delved into the dynamic fields of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.

Mr. Efraem A. Janairo, Director of the Guidance, Counseling, Testing, and Placement Department of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Manila, also gave an insightful talk on the role of teachers in supporting the mental health and socio-emotional learning of Gen Z and Gen Alpha students. The day continued with discussions on stress management, teaching strategies, behavior management, and gamification, culminating in an evening of fellowship and academic networking.

The second day featured two additional plenary sessions, including a presentation by Prof. Magnolia Vida A. Cano, Director of the Regional Center for Science and Mathematics Education, on supporting students with learning difficulties. Dr. Chozara P. Duroy of DepEd Region V followed with a discussion on the department’s multi-faceted approach to addressing learning loss caused by the pandemic.

Notably, Mr. Nestor Lasala Jr. won the Best Paper award for his presentation on Studentsโ€™ Intrinsic Motivation Using Game-Based Activities. The event concluded with an election of new board members, including Ms. Catherine B. Guarnes from CSPC, who was elected as one of the Board of Directors of BIOTA Bicol.

The 11th BIOTA Regional Convention achieved its goal of strengthening the biology education community in the Bicol region. It fostered collaboration, promoted scientific research, updated educators on the latest pedagogical strategies, and created opportunities for professional growth. This event provided an invaluable platform for sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas, and inspiring innovation in biology education.
