DevCom students complete 200-Hour Internship Program

Thirty third-year students from the Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BS DevCom) program successfully completed their 200-hour Summer Internship Program (SIP) from June to August 2024.

The program, facilitated by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, provided students with invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between academic theory and professional practice.

The BS DevCom program at CAS, one of the college’s flagship offerings, is a four-year degree designed to prepare students for careers in development-focused, technology-rich environments.

The program emphasizes the use of communication and media in development work, equipping students with skills in media material design, conceptualization, writing, production, and fieldwork.

Students also engage in actual project and program implementation with a communication component, such as photo and video documentation, interpersonal and group communication, strategic communication, science communication; among others.

The Summer Internship Program enabled students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings. During their internships, students worked with media-related organizations and communication departments within various institutions.

They gained practical experience in communication tasks relevant to development work, including activity documentation, film and AVP production, scriptwriting, and other essential communication skills.

The program’s objective was to prepare students for careers in both the public and private sectors by providing them with practical experience that complements their academic learning.

The student interns were assigned to eight reputable agencies, including the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Office, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Department of Social Work and Development (DSWD-Naga City), Social Security System (SSS-Iriga), Local Government Unit (LGU) of Nabua, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Nabua, and National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Regional and Division offices.

Each student completed 100 hours of office experience at these agencies and an additional 100 hours at the CSPC Campus Radio and FMR Broadcast Center, where they gained hands-on training in radio program handling, news writing, and reporting.

Mrs. Gigi V. Severo, the Internship Coordinator, and Dr. Marlon S. Pontillas, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, expressed their sincere gratitude to all Host Training Establishments (HTEs) and Training Supervisors for their unwavering support of this important program.

The On-the-Job Training (OJT) for BS DevCom students is typically conducted in their fourth year and is a critical component of the program. These internships offer students practical experience that is essential for their future careers in media, public relations, and communication-related fields.

The success of this year’s internship program underscores the effectiveness of the college’s commitment to providing high-quality, experiential learning opportunities for its students.
