Forty years have passed since Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch political rival of President Ferdinand Marcos and the de facto face of the opposition, was assassinated on the tarmac of Manila International Airport.
His untimely demise sparked protests that played a pivotal role in the ousting of the Marcos family through the People Power Revolution.
Today, we acknowledge his ideals that perpetually kindle the essence of patriotism among the Filipino people. May his selfless devotion to justice, freedom, and democracy inspire us to stand strong, even in the midst of the most trying situations.
As prescribed by Republic Act No. 9256, the 21st of August is observed annually as Ninoy Aquino Day. The observance was also included as a special (non-working) day in Proclamation No. 90 issued by Malacañang Palace.
