CSPC joins LGU Nabua on self-harm prevention training for locals

The Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges Guidance Center, in collaboration with the Office of the Sangguniang Bayan – Nabua, conducted a “Community-Based Training for Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Post-vention on March 21, 2022 at the CSPC Auditorium.

According to the organizers the exercise was in response to the psychological crisis caused by mental health issues particularly in low and middle income communities like Nabua, with suicide as the second leading cause of death in individuals aged 15 to 29 years old. Citing the World Health Organization, organizers stressed the critical role of communities and government in suicide prevention. This comes with the support of the LGU-Nabua through the Sangguniang Bayan’s Proposed Ordinance No. 047 – 2020 which commits the LGU on the promotion of the people’s well being as well as on providing guidelines for mental health consciousness programs. Further, the activity is pursuant to Republic Act 11036 or the Mental Health Law which provides that every LGU and academic institution shall create their own program in accordance with the general guidelines set by the Philippine Council for Mental Health.

Nabua residents registered for the training-workshop. Topics in the training included discussions on the “Biopsychosocial Model of Mental Health”, and “Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention”. A workshop was also conducted by the resource speakers after the lectures. Closing stages of the activity included an open forum, evaluation and distributions of certificates to participants.
